degrades functionality w/ -mcpu=pentium -march=pentium on 486?

Hi,
   I installed Slackware 3.5.... which has egcs-2.90.29's default architecture
to Pentium... I wonder if it is going to degrade the (asm/machine) codes produced
by the compiler? Will it use some calls that 486 doesn't support, and what
will happen?
