Size of executable???

(1) $strip hello

    This leaves me with a relatively large executable; besides it doesn't
get to the root problem. Hey....thanks anyway.

(2) $size hello

    This shows -- again -- a relatively large executable. Yes, this has
something to do with static vs shared links.

(3) $ldd hello

    BINGO!!! The small executable has linked libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2, and
the large executable hasn't. So, how do I configure my compiler in
/usr/local to work with dynamic libraries? And, how do I get a libstdc++
for this compiler?
