GCC 2.95 generates bad code on some platforms?

I was building teTeX with it on 8 different platforms, and ran into
some curious problems. Most of them were of the indeterminately weird
variety (like headers files being generated incorrectly, installation
failing for no apparent reason, etc), but on one platform -- Irix 6.5 --
GCC 2.95 generated outright bad code; the binary (three different
binaries, actually) die with 'bus error' for no apparent reason. A
colleague of mine had a similar problem with GCC 2.95 and SSH.
When we used GCC 2.8.1, everything worked as intended. We ruled out
library version clash as a possible culprit of this misbehaviour.
Is this known? Are there known workarounds to this?
Many thanks,
