what you *should* probably have done is

g++ -o goodbye goodbye.cc

thank you so kindly for your help. The . / at the beginning of my
command is what did the trick . . . and the -o option and
. cc info helped tremendously also.

Oh by the way, I decided to put my c++ codes in a .C directory
so I would have them all in one place --easier to find.
