gcc 2.95.1 makes massive COMMON sections

I've just upgraded to gcc 2.95.1, and the COMMON sections are huge -
why?  Even when I compile with -fno-common, my common sections are
huge.  

With the previous version I was using (egcs-2.90.29) the COMMON sections
weren't a problem.

Does anyone know what's going on?  I'd rather not have to downgrade.
