which ld for gcc 2.95.1

Please reply by email as well. I am using outside news service to post
due to internal news server problems right now.

I recently upgraded from gcc 2.8.1
to gcc version 2.95.1.
I also upgraded from GNU ld (?) 
to GNU ld 2.9.1 (from binutils 2.9.1) which was the latest I could find.

Now I seem to have a lot of link problems. 
"collect2: ld returned 1 exit status" seems to be a really common line.

What version of ld should I be using with gcc 2.95.1 ?
