Can't build as on x86 Solaris 7

I am trying to build the GNU as and ld, since the Sun provided as
doesn't seem to work at all.  The problem is that every time I have
tried to build GCC 2.8.1 or 2.95.1 (the previous version is the one I
really want), it never builds or installs as or ld.

Is there something I need to do to force this?  I've read a number of
GCC FAQs, and they all imply that as and ld should be built by 'make
bootstrap'.

Any suggestions?
