I need to program in Windows

Dear all,

I am a Student at UMIST (Univeristy of Manchester Insitute of Science and
Technology) and I am a first year studying Computer Systems Engineering.  As
I understand is that GCC will work under Lynx but not Windows.  I have used
GCC and I liked it but, my computer runs Windows and I am looking for a
program to download from the net to program with.  As a student I don't have
much money and would prefer a free option.

Any help would be gratefully received
