GNU cc Problem on AIX 4.2

Hello:

I'm at a client site here with an AIX box and no compiler or
make...SO...I have just installed the binaries here from
http://aixpdslib.seas.ucla.edu/aixpdslib.html for the 4.2 AIX box
here...all seems well til I try to run a ./configure command for any
piece of software....here are 2 samples.....what am I missing??

OR

SHIMS:root:/usr/software/gcc-2.95.2# ./configure
Configuring for a rs6000-ibm-aix4.2.1.0 host.
Created "Makefile" in /usr/software/gcc-2.95.2
gcc: installation problem, cannot exec `as': No such file or directory
*** The command 'gcc -o conftest -O2   conftest.c' failed.
*** You must set the environment variable CC to a working compiler.

My goal is to have a working C compiler and Make to build things like
Samba and the latest FTP server here...any suggestions are
appreciated.
