according to http://www.gnu.org/software/java/

Running Java on free operating systems

As of July 1998, there is now a free implementation of Java. This
means it is now possible to run Java programs on a
completely free operating system. There is also another implementation
called Japhar though we primarily recommend Kaffe.

have to admit, don't know what this means exactly.

but, is there something like gcc, so i can write the source, then (my
school) can provide something similar to gcc? iirc gcc actually
stands for gnu c compiler, or summat.

anyhow, just looking to play with java.

thanks,

Jesse
