Proposed patch that fixes the original.

This patch with Assistance from Claude Sonnet 4.6 fixes the issue.  Two new
testsuite files provided. The change wiggled on a few exiting test cases.
Review comments appreciated before I submit to the list.

I am doing some additional testing as well. It regression tests OK here.
