I've briefly looked at this version and tried to break it with some more
complex tests, but so far did not succeed.  Which is good.

Regarding the use of C++ vs. C: Like Steve I normally do not use C++, so
I will likely be unable to review anything non-trivial that makes me feel
uneasy.

@Jerry: the final decision is up to you.
