Proposed patch for PR121475

Thanks for the patch Christopher. I'll apply this and try it out now. I had
independently developed a patch for this PR yesterday. I'm no expert in
gfortran but asked Jerry and Paul to take a look at it before posting it here.
I'll attach the patch here for further feedback/discussion.
