FWIW, it looks like this tripped on the PA as well:

gfortran: gfortran.dg/char_length_20.f90   -O3 -fomit-frame-pointer
-funroll-loops -fpeel-loops -ftracer -finline-functions  (internal compiler
error: in merge_clobber_groups, at rtl-ssa/accesses.cc:764)
