These slightly modified variants are doing well :


$ cat z2.f90
program p
   associate (y => spread(trim('abc'),1,2) // 'd')
      print *, y
   end associate
end


$ cat z3.f90
program p
   character(3) :: a = 'abc'
   associate (y => spread(a,1,2) // 'd')
      print *, y
   end associate
end


$ gfortran-10-20191201 z2.f90 && ./a.out
 abcdabcd
$
$ gfortran-10-20191201 z3.f90 && ./a.out
 abcdabcd
