r234568 ported to gcc-5

I ran into this old bug again while build testing with gcc-4.9.4 and gcc-5.4.1.
I checked that r234568 is the commit that fixed it on gcc-6, and did a trivial
backport to gcc_5_branch, which fixed it there as well.

Would this be something that could still be applied on gcc_5_branch?
