I confirm that gather is almost twice as fast on 
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00GHz
w/r/t
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz
(used a benchmark version of PR80248 example)
so on skylake, knl, (and hopefully on skylake-avx512) is profitable,
on Haswell and broardwell is not...
