Bug ID: 79860
Summary: i18n: single-word translation in "Character-valued %s
%qs"
Product: gcc
Version: 7.0
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: fortran
Assignee: unassigned at gcc dot gnu.org
Reporter: roland.illig at gmx dot de
Target Milestone: ---
from fortran/resolve.c:
gfc_error ("Character-valued %s %qs at %L must not be"
" assumed length",
module_proc ? _("module procedure") : _("internal function"),
sym->name, &sym->declared_at);
When translating the message from the above code into languages other than
English, the adjective "character-valued" might take a different form depending
on whether the following word is a procedure or a function.
The German translation may look like this:
Die zeichenwertige Prozedur ...
Die zeichenwertige Funktion ...
Das zeichenwertige Unterprogramm ...
So depending on the inserted word the rest of the sentence may change (Die ->
Das). Therefore translations should always come in whole sentences and only use
placeholders in contexts that don't influence the outside grammar of the
sentence.
