I only suggested the alternative patch due to the issues you raised in comment
#2.  I agree with you that extending the test to cover darwin would be by far
the better solution.

I'm unable to test your proposed patch, but it certainly looks reasonable, and
I like it more that my patch.  For what it's worth I think that would be a good
change to make.
