Sorry, but this is an enhancement request, not a bug report, so unless there is
a reason that I'm missing why the enhancement itself is problematic or
undesirable I would like to keep it open and, given cycles, implement it. (I
already have a very simple prototype that handles the three cases below and
passes regression testing with no issues.)
