Well, I've just tried to run:
$ make profile-build ARCH=x86-64-modern
for gcc --version:
gcc --version
gcc (SUSE Linux) 5.2.1 20151008 [gcc-5-branch revision 228597]
and:
gcc (GCC) 6.0.0 20160125 (experimental)
and both can build profiled LTO binary.
I had to apply following patch to be able to build the project:
