A workaround is substituting this excerpt

      case ('scratch')
        open(newunit=funit, status=fstatus, access='sequential', &
          form='formatted', iostat=istat)

with the following 

      case ('scratch')
        open(newunit=funit, status='scratch', access='sequential', &
          form='formatted', iostat=istat)
