Building bin-utils/gcc/glibc with --with-arch=armv7-a did the trick.
Atomic is not required.
However, if a thread calls std::current_exception it segfaults in
libstdc++-v3/libsupc++/eh_ptr.cc line 190:
__cxa_exception *header = globals->caughtExceptions;
Can only test static pthread linking currently with Wl,--whole-archive
-lpthread -Wl,--no-whole-archive
