My admin installed 119961-13, which is the current version of 119961-11:

    $ /usr/ccs/bin/as -V
    as: SunOS 5.10 119961-13 Patch 08/06/2014
     Usage: as [-a32] [-m] [-m32] [-m64] [-n]
    [...]

I'm still getting the same assembler error.
