ICEs 4.7.2 and 4.6.3 as described in comment #1.  ICEs 4.5.4 down to 4.0.4
with:

pr55838.c: In function 'f':
pr55838.c:8:1: internal compiler error: in do_SUBST, at combine.c:681

Older releases (3.4.6, 3.3.6, 3.2.3, 2.95.3) don't ICE.
