Just to say that on my system I have the same GAS version:

# /usr/local/bin/as --version
GNU assembler (GNU Binutils) 2.23.1
Copyright 2012 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

the GNU General Public License version 3 or later.
This program has absolutely no warranty.

Also, I see these assembler related errors in gcc/config.log
