I know the problem but the chance that a patch to 4.7.3 or 4.6.4 would only
help when you GCC vendor also includes such updates. And especially for
deferred-length, there are several issues which have been fixed.

I have a better work around:

  str = ( trim(blah) )

Note the extra "( )" around the expression.
