[Bug c/53387] gcc does not like /* */ comments

Hi Andrew,
It' s not related to my code.
Everything works fine when /* */ comments are replaced with // comments.
I am a 55-year old Assembly Language/Apl/C/C++ programmer and I know
what I am talking about.
Again, take a look at your own code.
