two more data points:

1/ powerpc-darwin9 also fails, so this is not x86-centric.

2/ the following succeeded.
Target: i686-apple-darwin9
Configured with: /GCC/gcc-4-6-branch/configure --prefix=/GCC/gcc-4-6-install

--build=i686-apple-darwin9 --enable-version-specific-runtime-libs
