Preliminary patch

I am getting two testsuite regressions with this patch. At least one of those I
think is an adjustment needed to the test case.  Possibly the same with the
other, but I am still testing.

After fixing the above, all that remains is a little code cleanup.  Please
begin testing this patch and report back.
