Oh, boy. Sorry. I do not remember why we added that assertion. It
may have been to avoid recursing twice, since copy_tree_r is typically
called to copy individual statements in a list. So, we never expected
to find STATEMENT_LISTs inside a single statement.
This may be largely unnecessary now.
