This optimization test case is cute. We should ship it to the optimization
folks.

And it should be yet another PR, even if we can come up with a work around.  I
am not going to have time to look further on this for a few days.  Thomas,
could you open a PR for the optimization issue and attache your c test case to
it.  Then add a refrence here to that new PR.  Make sure you put the word
"Optimization" in the PR summary so the right folks will notice it.

and thanks for the great sleuthing!  I am time compressed, as most of us are.
