look at the highlighted section

If my c++ code has any errors or warnings, the special symbol "a caret" shows
up instead of the 
function name or symbol that is the problem.
I built gcc 4.4.3 on RedHat linux 5.5 instead of using the default gcc compiler
that comes with the o/s
