So, after much single-stepping in the debugger, and some discussion on the
mailing list:

Here is the patch that I'm now testing.  It appeared to resolve the TestEarlyGC
failure after a quick rebuild in a dirty $objdir, but it needs a full
bootstrap/test cycle to be sure; results will be in tomorrow.
