OK, seems to be related to _Bool vs. unsigned char.

e.g.:

  unsigned char x_exit_after_options;
#define exit_after_options global_options.x_exit_after_options

c.f.

  _Bool x_exit_after_options;
#define exit_after_options global_options.x_exit_after_options

not sure where that is coming from...
