On solaris 8 box we are using gnu ld 
 ../configure --prefix=/3rdparty/fsf/gcc/4.1.0
--with-as=/3rdparty/fsf/binutils/2.16/bin/as
--with-ld=/3rdparty/fsf/binutils/2.16/bin/ld --with-gnu-as --with-gnu-ld
--disable-nls --enable-languages=c,c++


This is from solaris 8
