Steven is correct.  I am talking about malloc, which comes with your
system.  It was written by Jason Evans as in the je of jemalloc.
You can see the source code at www.netbsd.org in src/lib/libc/stdlib.

What happens when you compile the following:

#include <gmp.h>
int main(void) {
        unsigned int u = 268435472u;
        mpz_t x;
        mpz_init(x);
        mpz_set_ui(x, 2);
