This PR is still very weird.  For the curious here are the numbers, now
with numbers from trunk included:

4.3 -O: 0.4s
4.3 -O -fstrict-aliasing: 59s
4.4 -O: 1m3s
4.4 -O -fstrict-aliasing: 0.4s
4.4 -O2: 0.3s
4.4 -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing: 0.2s
