Sound familiar, aren't you speaking of MacIntel?  I have done some testing on
MacIntel with
a prebuild gfortran and I remember having some problems with as.  

I did not build gcc 4.1 recently on PPC 10.4.8, but I have build 4.2 without
problem with as

Apple Computer, Inc. version cctools-622.5.obj~13, GNU assembler version 1.38
