FWIW, this fails for me in the exact same way under Red Hat
Enterprise Linux v3.

Both of my 4.1.1 builds are complete failures at this point
(the other being Solaris 9 mentioned above, and yeah I used
CONFIG_SHELL=/bin/ksh there)
