I now think that this comment was likely correct.

I found yesterday that the Xserver update on Jan. 29, 2006 introduced
a problem with the console login.  The server was constantly restarting.
I also found another process running continually.  I guess it shows
I don't use the console much!

These problems are now fixed. I have a full 4.2 build running and
should know tomorrow if there is still a problem.
