Paul,
before I've only used the precompiled versions of gfortran. Yesterday I 
tested the 20060513 snapshot which didn't cope with my test case.
Then I downloaded the subversion source snapshot, applied the patch

(http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/attachment.cgi?id=11450&action=view)

and then it worked.

I don't now how bizarre that is, I can just tell you it works.... ;-)
