With your testcase, on i386, I obtain the following output:

 s1 = "ABCDEFGH"
 ia =   1145258561  1212630597
 s2 = "ABCDEFGH"
 s1 = "AB      "
 ia =    538985025   538976288
 s2 = "AB      "

which looks good to me.  Are you using a 64bit machine, by any chance? - 
see PR27449.
