I just noticed another (probably related) problem:

The following Fortran code is derived from some autoconf test:

      PROGRAM TESTRECL
      IMPLICIT NONE

      OPEN(UNIT = 10,FILE = 'conftest.rcl1', FORM = 'UNFORMATTED',
     :  ACCESS = 'DIRECT', RECL = 1, ERR = 101)
