Just to summarise the current tests:

           wide       wide2      wide3
GCC ver  ppc  i386  ppc  i386  ppc  i386
  3.4    OK   OK    OK   OK    OK   fail
  4.0    fail OK    OK   fail  OK   fail
  4.1    fail OK    OK   fail  OK   fail
  4.2    fail OK    OK   fail  OK   fail

GCC 3.4 is the most reliable, but I don't understand the pattern of failures.

I'll do a build in a moment as you suggest.
