Confirmed, only a 3.4 regression.
It was fixed on the mainline:
: Search converges between 2004-09-28-161001-trunk (#566) and 2004-09-29-014002-trunk 
(#567).

It broke on the mainline:
: Search converges between 2003-04-01-trunk (#218) and 2003-04-02-trunk (#219).
