Found the error:

Some time ago I defined the alias

alias make="make -r"

since the build-in rules of make don't work with the generic library
structure I'm developing --- and it seems that the build-process for gcc
relies on these rules.

So it seems that such an alias can't be used, but I must use "make -r"
all the time.

Sorry for bothering you, but I really tried for quite some time (months), and only
this e-mail exchange triggered my remembrance of that alias.
