Yep, it seems to be DOM, the extra assignment does not occur with
-fno-tree-dominator-opts. 
It also seems that this issue has been around for a while, it also occurs with an
old gcc version that I have around:
gcc version 3.5-tree-ssa 20031115 (merged 20031111)
