Doh! You're right, my configure command is incorrect as shown. My apologies for
the confusion.
When I configure, I'm in {blah}/gcc/Build, and I configure like so:
  ../gcc-3.4.1-20040625/configure --prefix=$HOME/local/gcc-3.4.1-20040625
