This has been bothering me also. Andreas Schwab suggested it was a
problem with environment variables when configuring. With that clue, it
isn't hard to see what the problem is. LDFLAGS is passed down to
submakes via BASE_FLAGS_TO_PASS, but it is not passed down to subconfigures.
The problem can be reproduced with these steps.
../gcc/configure
make all-gcc
This gives a gcc/config.cache with 'av_cv_env_LDFLAGS_set='.
touch ../gcc/gcc/configure
make all-gcc
This fails with a configure error saying LDFLAGS was not set in the
previous run.
rm gcc/config.cache
make all-gcc
This gives a gcc/config.cache with 'ac_cv_env_LDFLAGS_set=set'.
../gcc/configure
make all-gcc
This fails with a configure error saying LDFLAGS was set to the empty
string in the previous run.
This problem can be fixed by adding LDFLAGS to the list of variables set
and exported by the configure rules in the toplevel makefile. With the
attached patch, none of the above commands gives an error. The build
and target configure rules already handle LDFLAGS correctly. It is only
the host configure rules that need fixing.
If I don't get any comments in a few days, I will go ahead and check
this in.
